When you ask
a person to name a beneficial insect, the ladybug always come to mind.
There are about 5,000 different species of ladybugs or lady beetles
throughout the world, over 450 species found here in North America. Most
being voracious predators as both adults and larvae.
Description-Lady beetles are usually red or
orange with black markings. Some lady beetles are black, often with red
markings. They have alligator-like larvae.
Host Pests-Lady beetles feed on a variety of
insects. The feed on aphids, soft scale, butterfly eggs, small
caterpillars, mites, thrips, and other small insects, as well as pollen
and nectar.
